- 1/2 tsp hot sauce (optional)
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Lightly salt each slice and let sit for 10 minutes to draw out moisture. Pat dry with a paper towel.
- Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls:
- Bowl 1: All-purpose flour seasoned with salt and pepper.
- Bowl 2: Whisk together buttermilk and eggs until smooth.
- Bowl 3: Combine cornmeal, flour, paprika, and cayenne.
- Coat each tomato slice in the flour mixture, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat evenly with the cornmeal mixture.
- Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat (about 350°F/175°C).
- Fry the tomato slices in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
- For the remoulade sauce, whisk together mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, lemon juice, hot sauce, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne in a small bowl. Adjust seasoning to taste.
- Serve the fried green tomatoes warm with the remoulade sauce for dipping.
Notes
- For extra crunch, add a tablespoon of panko breadcrumbs to the breading mix.
- These fried green tomatoes are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in an air fryer or oven to maintain crispiness.
- Experiment with spice levels by adjusting the cayenne or hot sauce in both the breading and sauce.
