Ingredients

Scale

For the Fried Green Tomatoes:

  • 4 medium green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch thick rounds
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (plus more for breading)
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • Vegetable or canola oil (for frying)

For the Remoulade Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp pickle relish
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp hot sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Lightly salt each slice and let sit for 10 minutes to draw out moisture. Pat dry with a paper towel.
  2. Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls:
    • Bowl 1: All-purpose flour seasoned with salt and pepper.
    • Bowl 2: Whisk together buttermilk and eggs until smooth.
    • Bowl 3: Combine cornmeal, flour, paprika, and cayenne.
  3. Coat each tomato slice in the flour mixture, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat evenly with the cornmeal mixture.
  4. Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat (about 350°F/175°C).
  5. Fry the tomato slices in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  6. For the remoulade sauce, whisk together mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, lemon juice, hot sauce, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne in a small bowl. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  7. Serve the fried green tomatoes warm with the remoulade sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, add a tablespoon of panko breadcrumbs to the breading mix.
  • These fried green tomatoes are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in an air fryer or oven to maintain crispiness.
  • Experiment with spice levels by adjusting the cayenne or hot sauce in both the breading and sauce.
