Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tsp fresh thyme)
- 4 slices Gruyère cheese
- 4 slices crusty French bread or 4 burger buns
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions:
- Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until caramelized.
- Add garlic and thyme, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
- Deglaze the pan with beef broth, scraping the bottom to incorporate browned bits. Simmer until reduced slightly. Remove from heat.
- Prepare the Burger Patties:
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using). Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into patties.
- Cook the Patties:
- Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until desired doneness.
- Top each patty with a slice of Gruyère cheese during the last minute of cooking to melt.
- Toast the Bread or Buns:
- Butter the bread slices or buns and toast them in a skillet or under a broiler until golden and crisp.
- Assemble the Burgers:
- Place the toasted bread or bun bottoms on plates. Add a burger patty, top with caramelized onions, and finish with the second slice of bread or bun.
- Serve:
- Serve immediately with your favorite sides and enjoy!
