Description

Juicy, flavorful, and loaded with caramelized onions and melted Gruyère cheese, these French Onion Soup Burgers combine the best parts of a classic soup with the hearty satisfaction of a burger. Perfect for cozy dinners or entertaining guests!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tsp fresh thyme)
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese
  • 4 slices crusty French bread or 4 burger buns
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
    • Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until caramelized.
    • Add garlic and thyme, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
    • Deglaze the pan with beef broth, scraping the bottom to incorporate browned bits. Simmer until reduced slightly. Remove from heat.
  2. Prepare the Burger Patties:
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using). Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into patties.
  3. Cook the Patties:
    • Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until desired doneness.
    • Top each patty with a slice of Gruyère cheese during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  4. Toast the Bread or Buns:
    • Butter the bread slices or buns and toast them in a skillet or under a broiler until golden and crisp.
  5. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Place the toasted bread or bun bottoms on plates. Add a burger patty, top with caramelized onions, and finish with the second slice of bread or bun.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve immediately with your favorite sides and enjoy!

Notes

  • Onions can be caramelized ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Leftover patties can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
  • For extra flavor, add a smear of Dijon mustard or garlic aioli to the bread before assembling.
